Visitors who came to Newark for the NCAA Men's Basketball East Regionals spent $6.3 million at Newark regional businesses, according to a report by the Prudential Center, Brick City Development Corp. and the Newark Regional Business Partnership.
The analysis drew on spending formulas used by Raleigh, N.C., when it hosted the 2008 NCAA tournament. The $6.3 million included estimated spending on hotels, restaurants and retail merchandise, but didn't include sales taxes, transportation, tickets or parking sales. -AndrewKitchenmanMore than 80 percent of the tournament visitors came from outside New Jersey, according to data from ticket sales for the games between North Carolina, Marquette, Ohio State and Kentucky. The analysis estimated visitors booked more than 4,480 hotel rooms for an average of two-and-a-half days, resulting in $1.5 million in hotel revenue.
